IFFA 2025: Where the Future of Natural Food Coloring Meets Innovation

From May 3 to 8, 2025, the global food industry will turn its attention to Frankfurt, Germany, for one of the most influential events of the decade: IFFA 2025. This year, IMBAREX, a global leader in natural food colorants, will proudly exhibit at Stand E78 – Hall 11.0, showcasing the vibrant potential of carmine, curcumin, chlorophyll, and more in a market demanding clean-label solutions.

But IFFA 2025 isn’t just another trade fair—it’s a turning point.

A New Era of Color: The Shift Toward Natural Pigments

On April 22, 2025, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the FDA announced a comprehensive plan to eliminate eight synthetic food dyes from the American food supply. This move is part of the national initiative “Make America Healthy Again”.
This decision involves:

  • Revoking authorizations for synthetic dyes like Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B
  • Phasing out others such as Green No. 3, Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1, and Blue No. 2
  • Reinforcing the January 2025 ban on Red No. 3, based on its carcinogenic risks under the Delaney Clause

This change is not a trend—it’s a regulatory revolution.

At IFFA 2025, the industry will confront this transformation head-on, with exhibitors like IMBAREX offering viable, vibrant, and scalable natural coloring alternatives.

IFFA 2025’s program is built around four future-defining themes:

Reaching Next Level Performance

The transition to natural dyes isn’t plug-and-play. Manufacturers must adopt smarter, AI-driven machinery capable of managing the sensitivity of natural pigments to pH, light, and temperature. IMBAREX provides technical guidance and stable colorant solutions fit for high-performance processing.

Creating Value from Data

Natural colorants behave differently from synthetics. Real-time monitoring, traceability, and batch control become essential. At IFFA 2025, data-powered solutions will be key to optimizing product development using natural inputs.

Putting Sustainability into Action

The push toward plant-based, insect-derived, and algae-based colorants reflects not just consumer preference, but also regulatory pressure. IMBAREX’s range is aligned with long-term sustainability goals—reducing plastic in packaging and petroleum in ingredients.

Creating Product Variety

As protein sources diversify—from meat to mushrooms to cell-cultured options—so must the color palettes that define them. IMBAREX brings color variety for product variety, including Butterfly Pea Extract, Jagua Blue, and Cochineal-based Carmine, all adapted to new formulation challenges.

Overcoming the Challenges of Natural Reformulation

Natural dyes aren’t without their hurdles:

  • Heat and pH sensitivity
  • Limited chromatic range
  • Lower shelf stability
  • Higher production costs
  • Longer reformulation timelines

But at IFFA 2025, companies like IMBAREX will demonstrate how these challenges are being tackled through innovation, sourcing partnerships, and cross-industry collaboration.

The Opportunity: A Growing Global Market

According to recent market data, the food coloring industry is expected to grow from $4.63 billion in 2024 to $6.67 billion by 2029, driven by natural ingredient demand. In North America alone, synthetic dyes still account for a significant share—but the gap is closing fast, with FDA fast-tracking approvals for alternatives like:

  • Butterfly Pea Extract (blue/purple)
  • Jagua Blue (from the Huito fruit)
  • Gardenia Blue and Galdieria Blue

IMBAREX is at the forefront, offering ready-to-implement solutions and technical guidance to make the switch seamless and profitable.
