Red Iron Oxide: What does the FDA say about Its use in Food?

Looking for a red food colorant in the U.S.? Red Iron Oxide, also known as ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃), is a deep red pigment derived from natural minerals like hematite, or produced synthetically. It has long been used as a durable and stable pigment across industries—especially in construction, paints, cosmetics, and even pharmaceutical coatings.

However, when it comes to food use, the rules are not the same worldwide.


Is Red Iron Oxide FDA Approved for Food?

No. The FDA does not allow Red Iron Oxide as a food colorant in the United States. It is not included in the FDA’s list of color additives approved for direct addition to foods.

Regulatory Status:

Use FDA Approval
Cosmetics Approved for external use (CI 77491)
Pharmaceuticals Approved for tablet and capsule coatings
Food Not approved for human consumption

According to 21 CFR 73.2250, iron oxides are certified for external drug and cosmetic uses only. Using them in edible products violates current U.S. food safety regulations.

What About Other Countries?

The regulatory landscape varies:

  • European Union: Red Iron Oxide is approved as E172, widely used in candies, supplements, and coatings.
  • India & Asia-Pacific: Permitted in some local regulations, particularly in nutraceuticals.
  • Australia/New Zealand: Regulated under specific limits.

This discrepancy has led many international manufacturers to adjust their formulations when exporting to the U.S.


Common Non-Food Applications in the U.S.

Even if it’s banned from food, Red Iron Oxide remains popular in other markets due to its color strength, thermal stability, and resistance to fading.

Approved Uses in the U.S.:

  • Lipsticks, blush, foundations
  • Tablet and capsule coatings in pharmaceuticals
  • Industrial paints, plastics, ceramics

Why Isn’t It Approved for Food?

While Red Iron Oxide itself is considered non-toxic in small amounts, the FDA has not deemed it safe for ingestion, possibly due to:

  • Inhalation risks during processing (as powder)
  • Potential contamination with heavy metals (if not properly purified)
  • Availability of safer, natural alternatives
