Tartrazine is one of the most commonly used synthetic dyes in the food industry. While it adds vibrant color to various products, concerns about its health risks have grown over the years.

The state’s decision aligns with European standards, where products containing tartrazine must carry a warning label. This regulatory action was largely motivated by studies linking artificial food dyes, including Yellow 5, to hyperactivity in children. A pivotal study published in The Lancet found that children consuming artificial food dyes exhibited increased hyperactivity compared to those who did not consume these dyes.

This action underscores California’s proactive approach in protecting consumers, especially children, from the potential dangers of synthetic dyes like Yellow 5. For businesses, the ban signals the need to adopt natural colorants as safer alternatives that comply with both regulatory standards and the growing consumer demand for clean-label products.

Experts now recommend monitoring children’s diets for artificial dyes like Yellow 5 to minimize potential risks.


Yellow 5 and its potential carcinogenicity

The potential carcinogenic effects of Yellow 5 have sparked intense debate. Studies in animal models suggest that tartrazine may cause genotoxicity, meaning it can damage DNA, potentially leading to cancer.
